At this time of year, we are always reminded of how inherently unfair property taxes really are. As a single example, take for instance the following scenario:
Let's say that we "own" a $150,000 home. Let's also assume that our neighbor has a nearly identical piece of property valued the same at $150,000. We "own" our home outright. He holds a $100,000 mortgage on his. Now, why on God's green earth do we both pay the same tax?
